SkatefreshAshaQ&A in Uganda: How can you help beginner inline & quad skaters stay on bent knees correctly?

In this Q&A session on 20th Jan 2023 in Uganda, I had a training session with @skatingclubofkampala8831 who are a dedicated skate school who I’ve been mentoring.This is perhaps the most common question from instructors working with beginner skaters. How can I stop my beginner skaters from coming up in the knees?Firstly, I think it’s important to understand WHY they find it so difficult to stay down on correctly bent knees. I think this is because it is physically demanding to do so (even though it doesn’t look physically demanding to bend your knees in this way, if you continue to do it consistently then your lower body muscles will indeed be working very hard). So skaters come up because they don’t have the muscular strength to stay down. The body is also lazier than the brain, so the body can be coaxed and coerced into staying low for longer periods of time IF the mind is focussed on this and the mind is consistently telling the body to stay down. When the mind wanders, the knees will become straight. Part of an instructor’s job is to keep this focus in the student and keep reminding them every time they have come up.If they are truly unable to skate with the knees bent then more static training may be needed and grass is the safest place to do this. The lower body skating muscles will get trained doing the “pizza & chips” sequence over and over, so sometimes this is what’s needed (as shown in this video). Beginning with shorter sessions or having frequent rest breaks means the student will be able to focus more keenly and be able to replicate the desired knee bend more easily.The Skatefresh Method of learning with progressions allows you to progress every time you skate and to notice the improvements, adding to the fun and satisfaction.
