SkatefreshAshaQ&A: What’s the best way to learn a new skill on inline or roller skates?
from SkatefreshAsha on 23 Dec 2022

This is my final post of 2022 as I’ll be taking 2 weeks off with a Digital Detox and break from social media. I wish you a fun and relaxing end of the year and look forward to 2023.This question came in from @fatbenslim85 on Instagram. There are many ways to learn a new skill but the VAST MAJORITY of skaters learn a new skill by seeing it and then trying it. If it doesn’t come right away then they might go look at YouTube for some help and then they just keep trying it.As a skate coach for 22 years I can tell you, people come to me wanting to learn whatever skill is on their list and they tell me that’s what they’ve done, but they either don’t have the skill or they do but can only do it slowly, or it’s inconsistent and not “fluent”.I’ve developed a better, more fun way to learn new skills, whether you’re a complete beginner learning the basics or a seasoned skater wanting to learn the hard stuff. That method is breaking down each skill into its constituent parts and learning each part separately using a particular drill or exercise movement. This allow the brain and body to focus on one thing at a time which leads of each part being mastered. Then further drills add together the various “pieces” of the skill and “Voila”, you then have it.This method is more fun than the random trial & error and most importantly it’s safer and results in learning without falling because you are hugely reducing the risks by learning things in progressive chunks. The Skatefresh Method of learning with progressions allows you to progress every time you skate and to notice the improvements, adding to the fun and satisfaction. Skate practice becomes almost like a spiritual practice. Being in the moment, focussed on a single task, feeling and being aware of your body.
