Create OriginalsThrowback Thursday My First Session at Lynch Family Skatepark, Boston MA
from Create Originals on 5 Jan 2023

Todays #TBT is from 2016 when I(Hakeem Jimoh) got a chance to skate the Boston Lynch Family Skate Park for the first time. Growing up in Boston, we didn’t have many good skate parks(indoor or outdoor) so we mostly skated street, which was fine considering all the unique spots we have in the greater Boston area. The one indoor spot we had back in the day was the legendary Maximus skate park in Cambridge MA which closed down in the late 90s. It had a small street course, 9 foot vert ramp, and was established by some pretty chill hesh skateboarders(shout out to Doug and Ram). That park was briefly featured in the east coast section part of the Videogroove Magazine (VG7) video(shout out to Dave Paine for coming through). So when the $3 million, 40,000 square foot Lynch Family Skate Park was announced to be built and opened by 2001 we were all pretty juiced. Of course, like all good things you usually have to wait. We never expected though that it wouldn’t finally open till 14 whole years later in 2015. To be honest the fact that it took so damn long left a sour taste in my mouth so I wasn’t even that juiced to skate it when it first opened. When I got the chance to finally skate it I met up with Boston blade legend/OG Brandon Ford and he filmed some of these clips you see here. The park definitely didn’t disappoint and it was satisfying to finally have a REAL outdoor park in the city I grew up in. I always still imagine how much it would have helped the blading scene if it had just opened when it was supposed to. So many of the best spots in downtown Boston are historical landmarks so they’ve always been a bust. It would have been nice having a spot where we could skate all day without getting hassled. Anyways I’m glad it exists today and encourage anyone who visits this area to check it out. The sheer size, location, and vibe make it a worthwhile trip for anyone interested. We’ll definitely be hosting some Create OG sessions there this summer and hope to see you all who can make the trip.
