Korey Waikiki: The Weight of Expectation (Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene)

Korey Waikiki: The Weight of Expectation
from Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene on 7 Oct 2015

Korey Waikiki discusses his debut pro skate, distancing himself from his old image, going to jail and making up for a lack of video content in recent years. When Korey Waikiki turned professional for Razors back in 2012, it was signified by an edit that commenced with Brian Aragon informing him of the good news via video chat. It seemed like a fitting announcement as we would later find out that Aragon was gradually stepping away from pro blading and Waikiki appeared to be a worthy successor. After all, his skating shares some similarities with Aragon’s and there is no question that he has the potential to be the next poster boy for the company if he works hard enough. However, in the following three years, very little has been heard from the Nor Cal native. Aside from his pro team edit, Waikiki has only released one other edit to date and neither of them have been particularly impactful. Sure, the pro edit has racked up a lot of hits on YouTube – 78,536 and counting – but despite a few moments of brilliance there are a lot of filler clips and it feels like we are only seeing glimpses […]

Brian Freeman: Keep Busy or Die (Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene)

Brian Freeman: Keep Busy or Die
from Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene on 25 Sep 2015

Last year, Brian Freeman aka BFree’s Vibralux section proved to be one of the most engaging VOD releases to date. Under the creative vision of Kansas filmmaker Adam Johnson, Freeman astounded those who purchased his online profile with a more diverse trick range than we have seen from him in the past, some incredibly technical feats that include a 450 royale to alley-0op topsoul full cab out on one of Kansas City’s most famous handrails and a ballsy topsoul to 180 gap down an impossibly tight stair set that proceeds a horrific scorpion bail which looked destined to end in a hospital visit. Considering the fact that the last full section anyone had seen from Freeman previous to this was a relatively lukewarm performance in Adam Johnson’s Pariah on account of fracturing his tibia shortly before filming began, there was little doubt that the Oakland-based blader was definitely fighting fit this time round. The response was so positive to his section that Adam Johnson later commented that he wished he had charged more for it, which suggests that sales were equally as favourable. It takes a lot to produce a video part that can stand alongside the likes of Chris […]

Adapt Brand: Passion Versus Industry (Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene)

Adapt Brand: Passion Versus Industry
from Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene on 16 Sep 2015

Pieter Wijnant talks about the roots of Adapt, turning down the big money to design skates for Rollerblade, team changes and his brand’s renewed focus. Since emerging on the aggressive rollerblading market approximately five years ago, Holland-based independent skate manufacturer Adapt have been a pioneering force within the industry and their innovation has gone from strength to strength with each passing year. The company, operated by couple Pieter Wijnant and Olga Bouwhuis, produced the first ever handmade aggressive inline boot and in five short years have been responsible for many other industry firsts, including the option to custom design your own skate via their website and the Vegan skate, for the conscientious skater who does not wish to wear dead animal skin on their feet. Their impressive arsenal of products now includes soul plates, wheels and bearings under the Symetrics moniker and this year marks the release of their new flat frame and two new skates – the Hyperskate Zero and GTO. It’s fairly safe to say that this is a company that refuses to go stagnant and constantly searches for ways to progress blading technology, and it seems like the industry giants are taking notice. Last year, Pieter was headhunted by […]

Slaptap And Blade Clothing Tour 2015 (Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene)

Slaptap And Blade Clothing Tour 2015
from Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene on 13 Sep 2015

Slaptap and Blade Clothing Tour 2015 Day One As with any rollerblading tour, the plan to set off at 9am fell through pretty quickly. We were all meeting at Mark Worner’s house in Taunton. Some of us had arrived the night before and some people with less distance to travel were turning up first thing in the morning. We watched the latest VOD sections and ate breakfast at Mark’s house while waiting for the last people to turn up, packed the mini-bus with skates, tents and assorted pillows and at exactly something-past-ten headed south for Devon. At this point, the tour was made up of myself, Slaptap owner Chris Leaver, Mark Worner, Matt Smith, Sam Cooper, Joe Harvey, Blake Bird, Danielle McCloskey, Si Coburn, Matthew Brown and Niko Salaman. The first skatepark on our agenda was Ashburton. This turned out to be the first of many tricks to be played on Matt Smith as Chris told him at the last minute to drive to a different park. Ashburton is a relatively new concrete park with a fairly standard layout, but it was empty and there were plenty of us there for a session. Everyone skated between trips to the shop […]

Dustin Werbeski: Pandora’s Box Part 3
from Wheel Scene » Wheel Scene | Wheel Scene on 9 Sep 2015

Undercover Wheels, THC and The Future In the final edition of Pandora’s Box, Dustin Werbeski discusses why he has lost faith in Xsjado as a quality product, the reasoning behind cutting up a set of USD Aeon soul plates and putting them on an old pair of Salomon skates, his plans with Undercover wheels and future video releases. He also ended up revealing that he may have had some influence on Carson Starnes’ decision to leave Razors and offered up a few other surprising stories. Oh, and we have a few more photos from Werbeski’s archives. Read on to find out more. What’s up with the Instagram photo you posted of the Salomon with the Aeon soul plates? Yeah… (Laughs) When everybody gets their hands on them, they will see exactly what I am getting at. With the new technology, USD have allowed the wheels to literally sink up into the soul plate. You are so close to the ground. It works amazing for 72mm wheels. I’ve never skated a frame that allows you to do a royale in 72mm wheels as easily as you can in 60mm wheels, aside from the Aeons. You don’t even realise you are grinding with […]
